| The scene is an allegory which depicts the relationship between workers within an industrial society, where they no longer trade their labours directly with others, but are forced to trade their labours indirectly through the exchange of money, but still remain shackled by their common humanity (these are two characters in the foreground). The background and the left of the scene depicts the illusion of the material wealth that their labours strive to create, whilst the centre and right of the scene depicts the conflict and suffering which arises from that avaricious drive for greater material wealth. | |||
